People around the world have been using essential oils for thousands of years. From ancient Egypt and Greece, to Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, plant oils have long played a role in wellbeing, ritual, and everyday life.
Living slowly, mindfully, and with a lighter impact on the planet often means looking back to rediscover traditions we once knew instinctively but abandoned in favour of convenience and clever marketing.
Making your own home and beauty products is one of those small, satisfying acts of rebellion in a world dominated by cheap, processed, chemical‑filled, plastic‑packed alternatives. And essential oils sit at the heart of it all.
Loved for their beautiful aromas, versatility, and sustainability, essential oils bring simple joy to everyday rituals while helping us reconnect with natural, intentional living.
Start Simple
It can be overwhelming when you first start using oils, so our Starter Pack of 12 carefully selected oils is a great place to begin, with a range of fragrance notes and benefits you can experiment with.
📖A Guide to Using Oils at Home
Whether you’re new to essential oils or looking to expand how you use them, this guide explores creative, gentle and practical ways to weave them into your life.
🌿 A Brief History of Essential Oils
Essential oils have always been closely tied to nature, ritual, and wellbeing. Ancient civilisations distilled botanicals for ceremonial use, healing balms, and natural perfumes.
Over time, these practices have evolved into the aromatherapy we know today. Whether that's having a relaxing massage or filling your home with gorgeous smells. It's a holistic approach that uses plant extracts to support emotional balance, relaxation, and sensory pleasure.
Modern essential oils are created through steam distillation or cold pressing, depending on the plant.
It takes a lot of time, equipment, and plant material to create your own oils, there are also legal constraints on distilling, so buying quality essential oils is the best option.
At Hen's Tooth, I try to source products from ethical suppliers so I am confident that the oils we supply contribute in a positive way, and that growers and producers are treated fairly.
🌱 Why Essential Oils Are a Sustainable Choice
Choosing essential oils is a simple way to reduce reliance on synthetic fragrances and chemical‑heavy products. A few drops go a long way, making them a low‑waste, long‑lasting option for home fragrance, cleaning, and self‑care.
Sustainable benefits include:
-
Minimal packaging compared to large plastic cleaning or fragrance bottles. When you buy a large bottle of artificial fragrance you are buying a bottle of mostly water. Essential oils are super concentrated so a tiny bottle and a few drops go a long way.
-
Natural ingredients instead of synthetic perfumes. Essential oils are derived from plants and spices instead of petrochemicals.
-
Multi‑use versatility, reducing the need for multiple single‑purpose products. You can make so many things with essential oils, you don't need to buy lots of products. A few simple ingredients can have a multitude of uses.
-
Long shelf life, especially when stored in amber or dark glass. The oils are distilled and will last for years.
Our Essential Oils Starter Kit includes 12 beautifully aromatic oils in recyclable glass bottles and packaged in cardboard. They are a thoughtful, eco‑friendly addition to your home and small way to reduce the chemical load we are exposed to every day from many commercially produced synthetic products.
